The Toots and The Maytals
Hey all. Last night I saw the best show I have ever been to. It is near unexplainable, the whole experience. It was the most amazing event I have ever had the pleasure to witness and as the rasta man at the end said, "This was truly a magical evening!" The concert I went to see was the Toots and the Maytals at the Fillmore in San Francisco and the music was beyond belief. Now I love their music, but this stuff is like 30 to 40 years old so I didn't know what to expect at all. When the band came out I didn't know who was from the orginal band or if there were any besides him still playing.
First the band was introduced and they started into a dub, and then the lead guitarist steps out and gave the introduction we were all waiting for. "The man who invented the word regee, it didin't even existed until he thought it up", and then out he comes, this little man who with muscular arms twice the size of mine, this 72 year old man from Kingston Jamaica and wow what a show he put on. He kicked it off with a "hey" that rocked my world, a shout out to SF and all us "beautiful people". He was louder then I could ever imagine a man of his age to be and when the band jumped into "scare him" his lyrics resounded in my ear clearer and stronger then my sound system at home ever could do. His voice had lost none of his potentecy and his dancing feet were still going.
My father had told me stories about this mans dancing and I expected to see nothing more then a shuffle or two. But to my great amazement this man was a dancing machine, full of engery and love that I could never have imagined. The show literally had me smiling uncontrollably from start to finish. It was so high engery, so full of love and happiness and community, it was just unbelievable. They went on for 2 and a half hours never slowing down, not one quite moment, the songs would go on and riff in and out of eachother, we all sang along and he shook everyones hand. He introduced his songs with such care and joy, "I want to sing this song especially for you because... YOUR SO BEAUTIFUL!!" or "I want to dedicated this song to... EVERYBODY!!" and.... I could go on forever. My advice to you is, as a fan of any type of music in any langague anywhere, if you ever see that The Toots and the Maytals are coming to your town, buy tickets first thing, it is one thing you will never ever regret. I will leave you with a quote from one of my favoirte songs, that I will never forget hearing.
"Today, today is such a happy day! Tonight, tonight can be a happy night!"
